On the 55th National Maritime Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday credited BR Ambedkar’s dedication towards ensuring that India has a “vibrant” maritime sector.
In a series of tweets, Modi said: “Our efforts for a vibrant maritime sector are inspired by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. It was Babasaheb who gave topmost importance to Jal Shakti, waterways, irrigation, canal networks and ports.”
“His work in this sector augured extremely well for the people of India,” he said.

Modi further said that the maritime sector can power India’s transformation.
“The maritime sector in India, with its rich history, has the potential to power our nation’s transformation,” he said.
“On National Maritime Day, we affirm our commitment to harness our maritime strengths for the nation’s prosperity.”

In India, April 5 is marked as the National Maritime Day every year as on this day in 1919 an Indian ship, SS Loyalty undertook its maiden voyage from Bombay to London.
This was a breakthrough for India as back then sea routes were controlled by the British.
The theme of 55th edition of the National Maritime Day 2018 celebrations is “Indian Shipping – An Ocean of opportunity”.
